To the Editor:
I was unpleasantly surprised when I saw my name implicated in a case of duplicate publication. The note appeared in Circulation Research (2002;91:e33), and it referred to a publication of an article (Arriero et al. 2002;90:719727) that displayed a gel that had been previously published in at least three other studies. As the first author on one of these publications (Alonso et al. Mol Cell Biol. 1997;17:57195726), I would like to point out some clarifications to this respect. (1) As a postdoctoral fellow, I worked in the laboratory implicated from September 1995 to August 1996, and during this time, I carried out all the experiments presented in the study published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1997. (2) Some of these experiments were not published on that occasion and appeared later in Sánchez de Miguel et al (J Vasc Res. 1999;36:201208) (Figures 3 and 4), where I appear as the second author. However, I was not asked to give my permission for this publication, and I had no knowledge of this study until it was finally published. Thus, I did not know that some figures that had been previously published in Alonso et al would also appear in Sánchez de Miguel et al. (3) I have not had any relationship with subsequent publications from this laboratory nor with the unauthorized use of my experiments in Jimenez et al (Circulation. 2001;104:18221830) and Arriero et al (Circ Res. 2002,90:719727).
