Editorial Policy Changes at Circulation Research

The Editors would like to call your attention to three changes in policy and procedures relative to Circulation Research, effective with the present issue.
First, a formal online submission module has now been implemented. Authors will go to a Web site (http://www. circresaha.org/submissions) from which the entire submission process will be menu-driven. Effective immediately, online submission becomes the preferred mode of contribution to this journal. Although we still allow hard-copy submission for the time being, all submitting authors will be required to complete the relevant manuscript information pages (corresponding author information, title, etc) via the Internet. Manuscripts will not be evaluated until the manuscript information data have been entered, and until the manuscript and figures have been verified to be readable and accurate.
Second, we have abolished the category of Brief Communications. The publication lag is now so short for Original Contributions that we can offer little additional expediency for slightly shorter manuscripts. Authors should be aware that the length limits for Original Contributions are merely upper limits; manuscripts that conform to the old criteria for Brief Communications will be processed without prejudice. In the world of modern scientific publishing, brevity is always a virtue. Brief studies that merit very rapid review and publi-cation can still be submitted as Reports. Longer studies will continue to receive accelerated review and online publication when submitted as UltraRapid Communications.
Third, we have established a category of Letters to the Editor, the first of which appears in this issue.1 Such Letters will be reviewed by the Editors only to establish a modicum of scientific courtesy; replies will not be solicited in advance from the authors of articles addressed, but are welcome if the authors believe that a reply is merited. Letters to the Editor will appear online only. Letters to the Editor are to be distinguished from Research Commentaries, which generally contain new data and merit peer review.
Finally, by way of a preview of innovations to come, the Editors are determined to begin early online posting of accepted articles, subject to criteria to be developed in consultation with the Scientific Publishing Committee.
