| Instructions to Authors: Reports |

Reports enable rapid review and publication of important scientific findings that can be explained and documented concisely. The length is strictly limited to three printed pages in the journal. The following word and figure limits are offered as general guidelines, recognizing that individual Reports may use more or less words depending on the number and size of display items. Submissions that are overly long will either be returned for abbreviation or processed in another category, according to the authors preference.
Word Limits: approximately 2000 words (10,000 characters), including all sections of the manuscript (abstract, text, figure legends, references).
Display Items: one to three figures and/or tables may be accommodated, depending on size of figures/tables and length of text.
Abstract: The abstract should be terse and limited to an explanation of the question addressed and the central findings. Text: Within the text, separation into sections (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion) is optional. References: Citations should follow journal style.
Online Data Supplement: Full methodological details and supporting information may be appended as an online data supplement, which must be submitted along with the Report and will undergo peer review. If citations are made in the online data supplement, the supplement must include its own independent reference section numbered sequentially, beginning with Reference 1. Likewise, figures and tables within the online data supplement should be numbered independent of those in the print version (eg, Figure 1 online).
Submission Policies: Authors must follow all general submission policies pertaining to the formatting of a manuscript as listed in the Instructions to Authors, regardless of manuscript category, in particular the journal policies on prior publication and overlapping work. The submitted Report must be accompanied by a completed Manuscript Submission Form.
