It is with deep sadness that we recognize the untimely death of Rudi Busse, Associate Editor of Circulation Research since 1999.
Rudi will be sorely missed. He handled more manuscripts than any other Associate Editor, a reflection not only of his vigorous commitment to the journal but also of his remarkable breadth of expertise. A proper memorial piece will follow in an upcoming issue of Circulation Research.
Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that, effective immediately, Ingrid Fleming has agreed to serve as Associate Editor. As Rudis key coworker and mentee, Ingrid will ensure continuity of the editorial philosophy and expertise that Rudi provided. Ingrid has consistently ranked among the busiest referees for the journal, personally reviewing more than 25 manuscripts annually. She now turns her effort to the editorial level. We are fortunate to be able to rely on her at this difficult time.
Another transition worth noting is prompted not by the untimely death of a colleague, but by the pursuit of the path of opportunity. Effective this fall, I will be assuming an exciting new position as Director of the Heart Institute at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. My goal is to build upon the tradition of excellence at this fine institution (home to legendary clinician/researchers Prinzmetal, Swan and Ganz), and to create a world-class heart center. I will continue to serve as Editor of Circulation Research until my term ends in July 2009. The editorial office will remain in Baltimore. To help ensure editorial continuity, Gordon Tomaselli, who will remain at Johns Hopkins University, has agreed to serve as Deputy Editor, handling any issues that may require an on-site presence. Given the overwhelmingly electronic nature of communications among editors, staff, authors and referees, we anticipate no disruption of editorial operations during this transition period.
