the next several months,
three other MiniReviews will appear
on this theme. The topics to be
covered in this series are highlighted
in the text box that appears on
the first page of the Wier and
Balke MiniReview.
This new initiative, the establishment of series of Thematic
MiniReviews, is notable for the following features:
Each series of Thematic MiniReviews will be coordinated by a Guest
Editor who, in the case of the present series on calcium cycling,
is William Balke.
Other series already commissioned include one on gene therapy in the
cardiovascular system (coordinated by Toren Finkel,
Charles Lowenstein, and Eduardo Marbán), another on oxidant
signaling (Guest Editor David Harrison), and several on mouse models of
human disease.
Thematic MiniReviews undergo regular peer review. The Editors have
chosen to publish each article soon after it is accepted rather than
delaying publication until the entire series is ready for press. As a
consequence, various series of Thematic MiniReviews will run in
parallel, and articles in any given series will appear peripatetically
over the period of several months (not necessarily in consecutive
